Are nootropics legit?

Nootropics often claim to improve mental performance.  They work for some people and others claim not to notice any effects.  If you have not tried them before, here are some interesting statements about some typical ingredients:

Tyrosine is a popular dietary supplement used to improve alertness, attention, and focus.  It produces important brain chemicals that help nerve cells communicate and may even regulate mood…..

It May Improve Mental Performance in Stressful Situations

DMAE Bitartrate aids the production of Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps nerve cells communicate.

They also include vitamins and minerals ingredients, ranging from calcium, vitamin D, and the B2 and B6.

Calcium and vitamin D are thought to play important roles in neuronal functioning.

Vitamin B-2 and the other B vitamins help your body build red blood cells and support other cellular functions that give you energy.

I find these things rather interesting!

How do nootropics work?

Nootropics are any substance purporting to enhance cognitive performance.  This spans neurotransmission, healthy brain function, and the metabolism of energy in your body.  The best way I can personally describe it is it feels like I am “firing on all cylinders”.  When I personally take a nootropic, I get a sense of heightened focus, creativity, and productivity.  Others report nootropics as helping them “get in the zone”.

Research has shown that combining caffeine and L-theanine may help you multitask better.

Can nootropics increase IQ?

There is no evidence to suggest nootropics impact the taking of IQ tests.  Instead, think about nootropics as being something that might help you be at your personal best and enhance your levels of alertness / clarity.

Are nootropics safe?

The FDA does not regular nootropics like it does with prescription drugs.  It is important that the ingredients are clean, pure, and made in a laboratory environment.  To get this reassurance, look for a reputable brand with good reviews and a brand with the following badges on their products.

If you notice any side effects or do not see any improvement in mental performance, it could be wise to stop.  If in doubt, as always, speak to your Doctor. For example:

Tyrosine can have side effects and interact with medications.

However, generally speaking, the FDA recognises “food additive amino acids may be safely used as nutrients added to foods” in the right conditions (link)
